From Layers to Lift-Off: Gear Up for a Heli-Ski Day with HMH
That first step from a helicopter onto untouched snow is akin to landing on the moon. The sheer scale of the mountains, and the silence after the rotor wash fades, it's surreal.
To Heli-ski, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience we believe every passionate skier or snowboarder should have. And the key to making the most of it? Being properly prepared.
At HMH, we take pride in our highly experienced and personable guiding team, but we’re also incredibly lucky to be part of a wider snow community that includes some of the best gear suppliers in Aotearoa.
Whether you're based in Wānaka, Queenstown or Aoraki / Mount Cook, or just passing through, there’s no shortage of local legends to help you get kitted and ready!
🏔️ What to Wear: Dial in Your Layers
Layering is key. Think breathable, flexible, and weatherproof. Here’s your checklist:
- Base Layer: Moisture-wicking merino (top and bottoms)
- Mid Layer: Light down or synthetic puffer jacket
- Outer Layer: Waterproof, windproof shell jacket and pants
- Accessories:
- Neck buff or balaclava
- Warm beanie (for downtime & lunch breaks)
- Waterproof gloves
😎 Eyewear & Skin Protection
The New Zealand alpine sun is no joke, particularly when all your surroundings are reflective!
- High SPF sunscreen and lip balm
- Goggles with polarised lens (plus a spare lens if possible)
- Sunglasses for lunch breaks and chill time on the mountain
🎿 Gear: Ride the Right Tools
- Powder Skis or Board: We recommend at least 108mm underfoot for optimal float
- Helmet: Essential for both safety and warmth in natural, variable terrain
⛑️ We've Got You Covered with Safety Equipment
We provide all our guests with:
- Avalanche transceiver
- Backpack with shovel & probe
