News in Brief
With nearly a meter of fresh snow, we asked our experts for some tips so you can make the most out of your powder skiing day. Shaker from our local rental company talks about the best equipment and our Lead Guide Hugh tells us how to use it.
5 Tips for the ultimate powder day!
1) Have the right equipment...
The fatter the ski, the more you float weightlessly over deep snow. Watch our local ski specialist Shaker from Racer’s Edge give you the ultimate tips on how to choose the right equipment.
When you ski or board with Harris Mountains Heli-ski we provide avalanche safety equipment like transceivers and probes, we even show you how to use them. You will need to bring your own clothing, goggles, helmets, hats, and gloves!
2) Use the right technique...
“Lead with the knees, evenly weight the skis, ski powder with ease.” Hugh knows what he’s talking about and you should follow his lead when you're skiing in the backcountry. Keep your balance in the centre of the ski, knees in front of your feet and start your turns with a pole plant.
Snowboarders should focus on a wide stance, set slightly toward the tail of the board and keep the weight in the middle.
3) Choose the right terrain...
Who doesn’t dream of an untouched mountain with deep and dry powder? Our experienced guides know the best terrain for the ultimate powder turns, so, book your trip today and let us take you deep into New Zealand’s stunning backcountry.
4) Snacks and cameras...
These are a few things you definitely don't want to forget! We supply a delicious lunch but with all the excitement you'll want to keep your energy up! Fill your pockets or a small backpack with some water and light snacks like chocolate or Muesli bars to keep you going.
You're welcome to bring your own camera or Go Pro to capture your adventure - our only rule is that Go Pros are not 'chest mounted' as this can interfere with your transceiver.
Video guides are available on request to film your trip.
5) Most importantly, have fun!
Heli-skiing is not just for extreme skiers. Here at HMH, we have terrain to suit all abilities and our knowledgeable staff will cater to your needs, whether you're after steep and deep or wide open relaxing runs we have something for you! Powder snow is soft and forgiving so falls don't hurt, it's like landing on a fluffy pillow. So, point your skis downhill, relax and have fun!
Snow Conditions
Last week it snowed almost every night as well as throughout some of the days gifting us another 80 cm of fresh powder! Cold nights and low winds have given us fantastic winter conditions! Now that the storm has cleared conditions are looking incredible!
