The last 31 days were a proper reward for all the days of waiting for snow in July. After a slow start, winter 2019 came in all its glory during August and we had some of the best snow and heli-skiing ever!
“There is one word to describe the snow quality we got in the second half of this month and that is: PHENOMENAL “, says Harris Mountains Heli-Ski Manager Hugh Barnard. “It’s definitely some of the best we’ve seen in the last ten years.”
Every major storm was followed by calm, cold, sunny winter days and that resulted in perfect heli-skiing conditions. Word got around and Harris Mountains Heli-Ski managed to have the busiest day in the history of the company! On August 18th 119 guests and 31 guides used 11 helicopters to ski mountain ranges in Queenstown, Wanaka and Mount Cook. What an amazing day!
The great conditions attracted a lot of new clients, especially customers from China who are discovering the joy of heli-skiing more and more. We have also had a lot of loyal returning customers skiing with us in August, it's been a pleasure to see that people keep coming back to enjoy the goods of the Southern Alps.
The record number of guests has required having more than our usual number of staff and we were able to put a lot of our casual guides out there in August. This enabled us to add to the continuing change in the demographic amongst the guides: In the early days ski-guiding used to be a very male-dominated profession, it is now a job that attracts a lot of talented women as well. Anna, Laetita, Bronwyn, Cat and others show that gender definitely doesn’t matter when it comes to high-quality guiding.
We’ve put some great heli-skiing prizes out there via our #powderpartner campaign and the competition of the Aspiring Avalanche Dogs. Congratulation to all the lucky winners, we hope to see you soon!
August was a month to remember and we are very happy to have provided so many memorable skiing experiences to our customers! But the season is not over yet and the forecast for September looks very promising. We are expecting more powder days and some of that unique corn snow that our terrain gets in spring. If you haven’t managed to get out there this season, don’t wait any longer and book your heli-skiing experience 2019!
