Heliskiing in Spring

September 11th, 2010

Spring is now in full swing here in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. With plenty of snow (1-3m base) in our backcountry terrain in Wanaka, Queenstown and Mount Cook, we are operating right through September and perhaps into the beginning of October, depending on snow conditions and client demand, so just let us know if you are keen to go! Conditions are currently great and everyone has been enjoying riding the silky smooth spring corn snow. No doubt we’ll have a few storms passing through bringing a top up of fresh snow over the next couple of weeks. If we get some freshies, we’ll be sure to let you know – just LIKE our facebook page and you’ll get our powder alerts in your news feed!

Want to see for yourself what the current backcountry conditions are like? Check out this vid we filmed on 8 September. It’s not deep powder, but it sure is super fun out there right now!

Super sweet turns

Here’s some more footage of the awesome snow we’ve been skiing and snowboarding out in the backcountry this week. This vid is from our 25 July trip into the Mount Aspiring National Park, Wanaka. Super sweet conditions just now and there’s a serious dump of snow on the forecast for this weekend, we can’t wait. Life doesn’t get better than this!

Freshies for breakfast!

The New Zealand heli ski season is now well under way and winter is really starting to deliver. We’ve had 40cm+ fresh snowfall in our terrain over the last week and conditions are currently great… and there’s more snow on the radar. The powder drought is over! With July coming to an end, we’re excited to see what August – usually our big powder month – will bring. Fingers crossed, the snow gods will deliver the goods!

We’ve had lots of perfect bluebird powder days over the last week, with our guides hunting down the best snow and best lines to ride. Take a peek at our most recent video, filmed on 25 July 2010, in the stunning Mount Aspiring National Park.

Frozen waterfalls and perfect bluebird days

July 19th, 2010

The 2010 winter season in New Zealand is well underway now and it looks like we’re in for some fresh snow this week! With a deep base in the backcountry, endless untracked boot deep powder, clear skies and sunshine – we’ve been out heli skiing lots over the past two weeks. The terrain we have access to is extensive and covers mountain ranges in Queenstown, Wanaka and the Mount Cook region – for example the North and South Harris Mountains, the Mount Aspiring National park area, the North and South Buchanan Ranges and even glacier skiing on the Tyndall Glacier. There’s something for everyone out there, so if you are a first time heli skier or snowboarder, fear not! Our guides will take you to terrain suited to your level and find the best snow.

Check out this shot captured by one of our pilots, Grant Bisset, last week. One of our groups skiing past a huge frozen waterfall on Fog Peak in the North Harris Mountains with guide Chris Cochrane.

For more details on our terrain and where we heli ski, check out the map below showing our epic and extensive Wanaka terrain and go to our Terrain page – it’s packed with more info!

Sweet helmet cam footage from the start of the heli season!

July 16th, 2010

Despite all the crisp clear sunny days we’ve had recently, there’s plenty of powder stashes in the backcountry. We’ve been lapping it up for the last two weeks since heli ski season started. Check out this helmet cam vid shot on 4 July 2010. Looking forward to some fresh snow coming our way next week! Stay up to date with POWDER ALERTS on the Harris Mountains Heli-Ski Facebook page.
